Wedding Photography North East - Top Tips on Choosing a Photographer
So, you’re about to get married, and you’re starting to think about your wedding photos.
It’s now time to make a decision - who will be your photographer for the big day?
Full disclosure - you’ve probably already realised we’re wedding photographers too; we’d love for you to choose us, but we completely understand there’s a lot for you to consider.
With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of top tips you should consider when choosing your north east wedding photographer.
1 - How’s the Vibe?
Just like people are completely different, so too is every photographer!
One photographer may have a particular style, while another has a completely different one.
For example, one photographer might be all business. They might be quite corporate and everything’s businesslike. If that works for you - great! At Booth & Curtis Photography, we’re the exact opposite. As a real couple from here in the North East, we pride ourselves on our friendly, informal and approachable nature.
We’re a bit quirky in real-life, and we reflect that with our photography work.
We’d advise you to strongly look through the website of your potential photographer. If they sound like your kinda person, they may well be the right fit for you!
2 - Not All Wedding Photography Costs the Same - Look Around!
‘How much does wedding photography cost?’ is a top result on any search engine for a reason. People wanna know how much of their hard-earned money they’ll have to part with to book a photographer for their wedding!
The answer to that question is simple - it varies.
You may have already landed on photographers’ websites which state they charge upwards of £2000 for a wedding. Some may be even higher than that.
It doesn’t have to cost that much.
If you do some shopping around, you’ll find talented photographers who charge a lot less for their wedding photography, and you’ll still get amazing results.
Not to blow our own trumpet too much, but take us as an example. For our wedding photography, we charge £500 for a half day, £950 for a full day, or £1100 for a full day with an engagement shoot, with a charge for mileage added on at £0.50.
We get that can sound like a lot, but that comes in over a grand less than some other north east wedding photographers.
It pays to shop around!
3 - Take a Look at the Portfolio
At the end of the day, what you want out of your wedding photography is simple - stunning photos.
Naturally, this means you’re gonna want to see them!
Most photographers will have their portfolio splashed across their website; take the time to have a look through it and see what they’ve done, and if you like it, maybe consider shortlisting them!

4 - Have a Chat or Arrange a Meeting!
As photographers, our website are the first place you’ll likely hear about us.
But, behind the scenes of the interwebs, there’s real people there just like you!
One of the best ways to get to know your photographer and see if they’re the right fit for you is simply to have a chat. Whether it’s via email, in person, over Zoom - whatever! - just talk to them and see if they’re the right person to shoot your wedding.
We don’t bite! At least, we think most photographers don’t. We can’t speak for the others.
5 - Think About What Questions You Want to Ask Your Wedding Photographer
You’ll have questions you’ll want to know from your photographer, so have a think about what they are before you get in touch! Some examples might include:
Who’s actually taking the photos on the day?
How good is the photographer at organising people for photos, or do they have a more natural style if you prefer it?
Do they take a deposit on booking?
Do they have professional insurance?
Do they have a contract?
Ask them what their fave wedding photo is to get a good example of how they work
What will my wedding photography cost?
6 - Have a Venue Booked First!
Unfortunately if you haven’t booked a venue, most photographers won’t be able to commit to securing your date at the time.
We’d highly recommend you find and secure your wedding venue first, then get in touch after that!
7 - Try Before You Buy with an Engagement Shoot
Not ready to go all-in with the wedding photographer you’re considering?
Why not think about doing an engagement shoot first instead?
This is a great way for you to get to know your wedding photographer and to see if your vibes truly align. If they’re friendly, professional and you get good results for the photos from your engagement shoot, they’re probably gonna be awesome for your wedding photos too!
